Kyffin Elementary Science Fair: November 20, 2009

SPS is looking for volunteers to help judge the Kyffin Elementary Science Fair. The judging will start at 8:00pm. For more information, please contact Andrea Yocom if you would like to volunteer.

SPS BBQ and Movie: November 20, 2009

Come by Meyer Hall 220 at 4:30 to grab some hot dogs and hamburgers then hang out and watch Real Genius. Real Genius stars Val Kilmer and should have caused excitement for physics like it caused for the Navy/Air Force. We will also be done in time to go to Kyffin Elementary.

Mitchell Elementary Science Fair: November 12, 2009

Seven SPS members went and helped judge the Mitchell Elementary School Science and Social Studies Fair. Thank you to all those who helped.

The 2nd Annual Haunted Physics Lab: October 31, 2009

SPS hosted our Second Annual Haunted Physics Lab in the Ben Parker Student Center Ballrooms from 12-4pm on Halloween. Over 130 CSM Students and 130 young kids and their parents came by to check out the physics based science demonstrations and activities. Please click here for the flyer.

APS Four Corners Meeting: October 23-24, 2009

The CSM chapter of the Society of Physics Students hosted a regional meeting along with the American Physical Society's 4-Corners Meeting. Zones 14, 15, and 16 were invited. Approximately 425 people attended over 100 talks about all aspects of physics. Please check out the APS 4-Corners Meeting Website for more information. Click here for the Student Flyer.

Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award Finalists: October 19, 2009

Congratulations to our Faculty Advisor Dr. Chuck Stone for being one of 18 finalists for the national Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award. Please join us in congratulating Chuck for recieving this honor and thanking him for the continued support he has given our chapter.

SPS Tie-Dye Party: October 2, 2009

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported SPS by joining our tie-dye party. We sold 17 t-shirts, raising money for use in events throughout the semester.

SPS General Meeting: September 22, 2009

We're going to continue planning for the APS 4 corners/SPS Zone 14 meeting, the Haunted Physics Lab, Interclub Jeopardy, and the E-Days soapbox derby this week at 12:15 in MH 220.

Celebration of Mines: September 4, 2009

SPS served ~5 gallons of ice cream and ~5 gallons of lemon slushies a never ending stream of students at the Celebration of Mines.

Field Session Barbeque: June 4, 2009

After the NREL field trip, SPS hosted a BBQ for Physics Field Session Students.

End-of-year Barbeque: April 28, 2009

The SPS End-of-year BBQ is a collaboration between old and new officers: the old officers are responsible for transferring what they have learned, this report, and an end-of-year slideshow to the new officers, who put on the End-of-year BBQ to celebrate SPS annual achievements as well as bid the old officers farewell and welcome the new face of SPS. Faculty are invited to the BBQ. A slideshow presentation of the year's events and a rousing game of Physics Jeopardy followed.

Family Math & Science Night at Mitchell Elementary School: April 22, 2009

Mitchell Elementary School Family Math & Science Night (FMSN) is the major spring outreach activity for SPS. This year's FMSN was especially special to SPS, because the Marsh White Award monies were used to purchase a variety of new outreach materials. FMSN is a favorite with kids: they have fun learning about science, and the physics component provided by SPS is always a hit. This year's FMSN attracted more than 350 kids with their parents.

Chapter Officer Elections: April 21, 2009

Our SPS Membership elected a new set of officers. These officers will lead SPS forward to new heights in the year to come. New officers are as follows:

Congratulations to the new officers!

CO/WY AAPT and SPS Zone 14 Meeting at CSM: April 17-18, 2009

SPS hosted a meeting of Zone 14 in conjunction with the Colorado-Wyoming American Association of Physics Teachers section meeting. This meeting required the SPS officers to decide what activities to offer, where to hold meeting activities, how to book hotels for visitors from afar, and how to work with the Slate Cafe for meals. The meeting was a success, with over 70 attendees from around the state. However, only one SPS member from a different chapter attended. In the future, more effective advertising as well as possibly holding meetings in the fall when students are less busy could yield better results.

Summer Internships and REU Application Workshop: January 22, 2009

Undergraduate CSM physics majors worked in CTLM 223 to apply for summer internships and RED. CSM physics faculty were present to encourage students to complete online applications during the workshop, to answer questions about REU opportunities, institutions, research programs, faculty, and locations.

$1.00 Bowling at Golden Bowl: January 16, 2009

SPS hosted $1.00 bowling at the Golden Bowl. Jason Buster made this possible by contacting the Golden Bowl management regarding the reservation of a few lanes for only SPS. The members paid $1.00 for unlimited bowling, which is half or more off the usual rate. This is a great way to get SPS members together as a social event.

Science Fair Judging at Kyffin Elementary: November 20, 2008

SPS judged K-6th grade science projects at the Kyffin Elementary School Science and Social Studies Fair located in Golden, CO.

Ice Skating at Boulder Ice: November 14, 2008

Skating at Boulder Ice is an event everyone enjoys, from SPS members to undergraduate and graduate physics majors to physics faculty and staff. It can also be a profitable activity for SPS: Charging $5 per person is the norm. Jason Buster is the contact for Boulder Ice.

Science Fair Judging at Mitchell Elementary: November 13, 2008
