2007 Eid Photo Session - Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri By Izzat Nizam

September 23, 2006 - Saturday, Nice sunshine, mixed up with the super-chilly fall wind. All 40 Malaysians finally gathered for one of the most significant annual event - a photo session for the upcoming Eid Celebration held by the society.

The photo was to be sent to one of the major newspapers in Malaysia (Berita Harian, I suppose) in order for us wish our families "Selamat Hari Raya" (as well as to gain publicity) and also to make them feel proud of our achievements that we were able to go this far for our degrees. Yes, and we do feel proud to be here in Colorado School of Mines - one of the best schools in the world for Petroleum Engineering.

So the event started at about 11.30a.m and everybody dressed up in their colorful and dazzling traditional clothes. Most of the girls were wearing their gorgeous 'Baju Kurung's while the gentlemen had their smart 'Baju Melayu's on. We looked pretty much fabulous and neat, too. After about one hour of setting up things, overcoming technical problems and rearranging people (geez....one hour?), finally the picture was succesfully taken.

Well, we didn't just take pictures. We also recorded a video which I believe would be sent to the widely-known television network (in Malaysia), TV3 where we cried the "Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri" wish for all of our families in Malaysia.

It was a happy day for all of us where everyone craved those smiles on their faces but deep in our hearts, it was actually a bit sad to think that we wouldn't be able to spend "Hari Raya" (it's just like how big Christmas is celebrated in the US) together with our families later. But yeah, life goes on.. So we're okay =)

MySA Background:

Since decades ago, Colorado School of Mines has received a huge number of Malaysian students with most of them majoring in primarily what CSM is excellent in - Petroleum Engineering. It is believed that CSM has, in the past, contributed in giving education to the pioneers of Petronas, the Malaysian Multinational Oil & Gas Company which was set up in 1974. Amazingly enough, the trend still continues to this very day. CSM currently holds a total of 40 Malaysian students with 39 of them majoring in Petroleum Engineering and only one pursuing in Geophysics.

MySA consists of every Malaysian student who goes to CSM in a full-time basis. All of us are either Petronas or Government-sponsored, with Petronas sending about 90% of all the scholars. There are eight Seniors, 21 Sophomores and 11 Freshmen with 10 females and 30 males (Yes, we do need Petronas to send more girls here to balance the figure). For further details about each member, please check out the link that reads "Member Profiles".

Early this semester, a new President was elected. The responsibility was given with honor to Ahmad Tarmizi Abdul Wahab - or famously nicknamed Mizie. Congratulations to our new President. There was also election to determine the committee members. This year everything is looking good and promising. All of MySA members are looking forward to having great times with events organized by the committee. Previously, we had the Freshmen Welcome Dinner on August 26, Merdeka Bowling Day on September 2, and also the fun, newly-introduced Iron Chef on September 9, 2006. So far, all of the events were successful and just wait, there are more to come!! More Details in the "Latest Events" section (Thanks to Hazwani Rameli for maintaining this section)...
